Conversations with Trees of
the Oval

For this multi-phase project, we first created 2 cards that were created upon inspiration from a specific tree
on the Oval of Ohio State's campus. I chose the bald cypress, which I had in the yard of my childhood home.
Utilizing Adobe Photoshop for a majority of the project, this was a opportunity to grow photomontage and
visual composition skills.

Phase 1
The first phase of this project was to create two double-sided cards that were inspired by the meaning
behind the tree of our choice.
The first card was inspired by the tree I had in the yard of the house I grew up in. As I ideated, I thought a
lot about that tree and what it meant to my childhood. I was inspired by memories of coming home from
school in the afternoon and going outside and doing what I wished rather than having to do homework
or work. I played on this idea of childhood freedom and the way it feels that it went so quickly and wishing
I could be back in that time of life.
The second card expands upon the first by portraying the idea of children fighting against climate change
to preserve the memories that nature can bring.

Phase 2
The second phase draws upon the first, transforming it into a 14-page accordion book that portrays the
narrative seamlessly.
In some cultures, the bald cypress represents the end of a major life phase and the transition into a world
of new possibilities. I wanted to take this concept and make it personal, so I decided to portray a broad
story of my own life, encompassing growing up and the way my life has changed. Starting with my
childhood, where everything is light, playful, and seemingly clear, I used my own childhood photos and
things that reminded me of that time to portray this period of my life. The piece then moves into a more
complicated point, transitioning from light to dark, and things start to become less clear. Here, I wanted
to portray the period of my life where I struggled a lot and did not see a light at the end of the tunnel.
But even amidst that time, the cocoon represents a great change coming, and the fiery butterfly portrays
the way I came out of this time better than before. The piece then transitions to sunshine, filled with
joyous moments and a brighter look at life.
